The Dragon Tree by Nigel Dalton

March 2024 - The Dragon Tree

About the Image(s)

Here's an image I took recently in Madeira. It's an old Dragon Tree in the gardens at Monte Palace up at the top of the cable car.

I was shooting into the light and there were a lot of people around so I've been dodging, burning and cloning my way around this in order to get something I'm reasonably satisfied with.

It sounds like you did a lot of work on the dodging, burning, and cloning. I think it was well worth it - it's a lovely image. I couldn't help but notice two shadows (one really faint one) of the left that don't quite make sense because I don't see anything that could be casting them.   Posted: 03/02/2024 14:53:51

Very nice image Nigel. I do see the shadows that Theresa mentioned and could be easily removed. I like your placement of the very sharp Dragon Tree in the middle of the image and the hazy fade off into the distance. Well done.   Posted: 03/03/2024 08:33:39

Thanks all for your comments. The top shadow was left behind from the person I cloned out. Thanks for that. If you really zoom in, you'll notice that the cobbles are laid in a series of patterns going in one direction and then the other all the way around the tree. The lower shadow is one of those.   Posted: 03/06/2024 10:24:21

Glad you explained the cobbles Nigel. Makes the shadows very understandable. Thank you.   Posted: 03/07/2024 08:21:12

It's a beautiful tree. Must be lots of effort to remove the un-wanted stuff. I've been there. Good job.   Posted: 03/12/2024 13:01:39

Excellent work Nigel. You were able to isolate the tree and placing it in the location. Since you did a lot of work with the post processing, you can consider to remove the shadow that makes understanding the image has been manipulated.

best wishes

Beautiful tree Nigel. Hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of removing a shadow that seemed to bother some of us. I understand many of the cobble stones are laid to create patterns and are beautiful. What do you think? Any better?   Posted: 03/17/2024 15:57:49

Thanks for all your comments. I removed the top shadow on my own copy already Tom, after Theresa commented on it so I got roughly the same as yours. The bottom ones I left in.
I don't mind editing at all - thanks.
