Brazilian Agate by Cheryl Diermyer

October 2025 - Brazilian Agate

About the Image(s)

I would have titled this "The Edge of Brazil" and left it up to the viewer to connect with it in their own way. However, I've learned that when a photo is being judged, judges prefer an explicit title. I understand they want to know what it is they are looking at, but I can't help but feel it stifles creativity, both of the creator and the viewer.

I took this image because I wanted to experiment with macro rock photography, something I have not done before. The colors and textures caught my eye. The tiny specks of grit embedded within its surface, add a raw, earthy feeling, and for me, evokes the freshness of the ocean shores.

I photographed this in my home studio with one constant fluorescent indoor light surrounded by a diffusing light box. I used a tripod, my Sony a7IV, at 1/500 sec, 90mm macro lens at f22. In Photoshop Raw I cropped a small bit, brought down the shadows and the highlights, and slightly increased dehaze and clarity. I wonder what my results would have been if I had used a polarizing filter on my lens?

How about a title "Brazilian Agate - at the edge of Brazil"?

I love the detail in crystals and rocks. The colours and textures here are very interesting to me. I notice that the sharpness drops off at the side despite f22. Well done for keeping the camera parallel to the surface, as that is all nice and sharp.

A polarising filter might have helped the colours and avoid any reflections, the only way is to try it!   Posted: 10/08/2025 09:31:48

Nice colors. Looks like a geode? Good subject to play around with   Posted: 10/09/2025 01:25:18

I very much like the detail and colours of this one! I trust that you don't mind me trying to bring out the definition slightly, by using Equalisation, and Haze Removal in PS Elements.   Posted: 10/09/2025 15:07:16

I like this, good project. beautiful blue, I see the tiny grit. the crop works to give a triangle slice and a triangle black background on the opposite side.spiculated details of the layers is great. Here is my weird question. I feel like I want to dive into the crystal and see the cracks/webbing of the crystals. Can you do a stack on a flat surface to bring up more detail inside the crystal?   Posted: 10/11/2025 01:53:29

This makes for a great abstract with loads of detail in the rock's surface. For a subject that is probably very reflective, you've done a great job with the lighting, whether in the capture or in post. A good capture of your subject.   Posted: 10/17/2025 04:56:22
