July 2026 - Flight of the Oystercatchers

I had a lovely photoshoot with a nice sized population of Oystercatchers at Florida's Fort DeSoto Beach this past February. This is one of my favorite birds - I love the color contrasts,especially against a blue sky. The lighting was beautiful and I think the only editing I did was to crop for composition.
Settings: 1/1250 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 320, 600 mm using a Sony 300mm F2.8 + 2xTeleconverter

Gwen, awesome capture of very erratic birds. I've been experimenting with different f-stops to get all the birds sharp and still maintain a somewhat blurred background. This is my aim for sure!!! Not much I can add to all the other compliments. I do love pied oystercatchers with their red eyes and black and white bodies. Getting all the flying birds in focus is tricky and you did it. Well done. Posted: 07/18/2026 15:38:11

Really great shot...having shot at Fort DeSoto I know this is not an easy photograph!
