Mistaya Canyon in Banff, Canadian Rockies by Gwen Callas-Miller

October 2025 - Mistaya Canyon in Banff, Canadian Rockies

About the Image(s)

I continue to go through my week of Canadian Rockies photos. So much beauty. It's too bad that you can't hear the roar of the water in this photo of Mistaya Canyon. Mistaya Canyon has been carved over thousands of years by a rushing river that flows down from Peyto Lake. My goal was to capture the movement of the water and the curved flow of the water from the mountains. I used LrC to denoise, slightly bring up the shadows and darken the right side of the mountains whichI thought was a little washed out. I want the viewer to feel like they are sitting on a rock just out of shot, viewing the force of the oncoming water and majesty of the mountains.
Taken handheld with Sony a1, 24-70 GMii lens at 24mm, 1/320, f8, ISO200.

The incredible color of the glacial water in Canada never fails to amaze. You've caught a lovely landscape with water, mountains, rocks and trees. I like the way the river comes right at us. The texture in the rocks is terrific.

This looks like a painting to me! Nice leading line, S curve of the roaring water, anchor on both left and right bottom of the frame, great depth of field, so many elements that makes this a compelling photo. I could imagine myself standing on those rocks and taking in this beautiful landscape.   Posted: 10/13/2025 16:13:02

Gwen, this is an outstanding photo that is deserving of a large print. I agree with the others' comments. The image is well-balanced from both a compositional and color perspective. It draws the viewer in and imparts the feel of the place exceptionally well. The clouds add another nice touch. I, too, need to go explore the Canadian Rockies. Simply gorgeous shot. Great job!   Posted: 10/13/2025 16:46:12

Very helpful feedback, John. Happy that you like it. Yes, highly recommend and happy to provide input on our itinerary. The most challenging thing is that there is so much to see. A good challenge!

Wow, this is incredible!!! Amazing leading lines. One of the best landscape photos I''ve seen in a while.

One tiny suggestion would be to darken the foreground just a bit to bring out the details in the rocks.

But this is definitely one to be proud of!   Posted: 10/17/2025 17:01:09
