About the Image(s)
While out exploring in the Cochella Valley I spotted this culvert out in the middle of a random open expanse of desert. I hiked over and took several photographs from various angle. I present two different compositions. The main image reflects my tendency to hone in on the subject at the expense of context. The secondary image puts the subject in wider context. I like them both, but I'm curious about your thoughts as to which image makes for a stronger composition.

Hi Micheal! Hope you and your members are well!
Because it was strange or at least unusual to see the
culvert in this space ... its important to transmit that experience to the viewer: in this case, the wide angle view using space to help define a sense of "Place" is most vital in presenting an engaging composition.
Where the the featured (cropped-view) composition can be anywhere ... and thus truncates any expression or experience you enjoyed in real-time you are trying to convey.

Hi Michael, I prefer the wider angle version, although both tell a story. I like to see the context and the wider angle version really lets the viewer know that this is out in the middle of nowhere! Nice images.   Posted: 10/18/2025 14:12:31

Interesting image, Michael.
I too prefer having the context provided by the wider angle image.
