Under the Japanese Umbrella by Lauren Heerschap

October 2025 - Under the Japanese Umbrella

About the Image(s)

ISO 1600, 12mm, f5.6,1/60 sec taken on OM-1.

This was taken at the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon during the PSA conference. I adjusted the colors in PS, and used generative expand to add to the edges of the frame. I also worked on the yellow and red colors in PS.

Wonderful detail in that striking umbrella. I love the perspective from which my brain rapidly flips from seeing the center as concave to convex and back again.   Posted: 10/18/2025 21:30:41

Hi Lauren, What a wonderfully detailed umbrella! The image captures it well in a symmetrical composition with translucent lighting. The subtle magenta, green and blue details might benefit from more saturation. An alternative that is more abstract and dynamic could be cropping and rotating just part of the umbrella. The lower left corner of background was cloned in to get an image of just umbrella. It's a counter interpretation to the symmetrical rendering of the original. This is a good image to play with.
