About the Image(s)

This dahlia was photographed at the Chicago Botanic Gardens conference I attended. It was early morning and I loved how there was still dew on the petals and small pops of sunlight starting to hit them as well. The story in my mind was that this beautiful lady was patiently waiting for the sunshine to fully wake up and warm up from her sleep.

Taken with my OM 1 mark II and 40 - 150 telephoto lens at 106 mm, f 2.8, ISO 500. Edited in Lightroom and Photoshop as follows:

- Opened up the shadows to expose the small purple flowers in the background.
- Removed several distracting spots on the petals and background and a large leaf sticking into the image.
- Cloned more of the purple flowers into the dark space on the right where I removed the big leaf.
- Used a mask on the background to brighten the exposure a bit more.
- Used a mask on the center of the flower to brighten a bit more and add a little more detail.
- Cropped in a little closer to the flower.
- Added a slight vignette.

I tried to balance the background by cloning in the purple flowers on the right, as mentioned. Thoughts on if the background seems too busy. I loved the soft colors in the background, but is it competing with rather than complementing the flower? All comments appreciated as usual!

Both images are lovely, Denise. I like the contrast in the original. But the purple flowers in the background on the final complement the yellow in the flower nicely. That adds a color contrast.
To me, the background is not too busy. It is part of the story. In my opinion, "business" is denigrated all to often. Life IS busy! That being said, your background emphasizes the flower, and in my opinion, it is far from being "too busy."   Posted: 10/13/2025 12:57:18

A beautiful specimen of a flower Denise. I don't think the background is too busy, and I like the bits of purple to complement the yellow. I do sort of feel like the flower itself might need more strength of details to make the background take more of a "back" seat to the main subject though. I didn't really realize there were dew drops on some of the leaves until I read your description. Just to see what would happen if I tried a couple of things, I used On1 Color Efex Dynamic Contrast and HDR effects. Then back in PS I dodged the dew drops to brighten them a bit. The look is now quite a bit more punchy than your original, but I'm not sure it worked, because there's something about the softness of your version that really appeals to me.   Posted: 10/14/2025 22:42:47

You definitely brought out more detail on the flower. I like how you were able to bring out the brightness in the dew drops as well. I may play with this a bit more to try and find a balance between my softness and your punchy edits, because I do like them. But maybe a tad softer. Denise, I don't think the background is too busy either. It is complimenting the subject. I like the soft of the main image, and would leave it like that. Beautiful!   Posted: 10/20/2025 16:32:52

Kia ora Denise - your decision to add more purple flowers in the background really works, and helps the focus on this beautiful dahlia. A beautiful image!   Posted: 10/23/2025 03:50:01
