About the Image(s)

This is one of my favorite photographs from my trip last March to Sedona Arizona. My favorite part isn’t actually the mountains, it is the yoga class on the lower mountain plateau. At first, I cropped the photo so the class was enlarged and definitely the subject of the photograph. The problem with that was the wonder from the location was lost. I know I broke a few subject-photography rules here, but I am okay with that. I once took a yoga class in a smelly old gym with no windows. I only went a few times. The class at this location would be hard to miss. I used Lightroom and Topaz AI. Pentax K-1, f11, 1/200 sec, ISO 200, 28mm.

First off Jay, there are no "rules" in photography, only "guidelines". Your photography is exactly that "your" photography. So feel free to use some guidelines, but don't let them rule and dictate your photography. Great use of foreground, midground and background bring good depth to this image and the colours all tie in together well, giving the impression they are accurate. As for the yoga class all I can say is "Fair Dinkum", (that's aussie speak for Oh My Gosh), what are they thinking way out there?   Posted: 10/13/2025 04:43:56

Jay, this photograph presents a truly stunning vista. Including the word "yoga" in the image title could engage viewers, encouraging them to search for that element within the scene. The contours of the mountain in the left foreground effectively guide the viewer's attention toward the yoga class. In my opinion, cropping some of the right side and top to achieve a 4x5 ratio would help reduce distractions from the expansive mountainside and minimize the amount of sky visible. The large boulder in the lower left foreground is thoughtfully positioned, and this revised crop would nicely balance the prominent mountain on the right. Overall, this is a beautifully captured and well-processed image!

I agree with Tres. A tighter crop would improve the image. There's not much being added on the right. 4X% or ever 1:1.   Posted: 10/23/2025 13:40:25

I am always fascinated to see snow in these 'desert' locations - I know they are quite high, but in the UK, we expect it to be hot all the time in Arizona! Great combinations of colours - strong reds, blues and greens. I did not notice the yoga class at first, so if that is what you want to present, I do think a crop would help. The large tree bottom right either has to be all in or all out. For me, cropping it out puts the yoga class on the bottom third, balanced by the foreground rock, and we still have the depth of view off to the distant mountains.   Posted: 10/26/2025 17:50:26
