Pfeiffer Beach by Raymond Tice

October 2025 - Pfeiffer Beach

About the Image(s)

During a visit to San Francisco I drove down to Big Sur to take photos and stopped off at Pfeiffer Beach in a late January afternoon to photograph Keyhole Arch. This image was taken using a Nikon D810 at 19 mm with a 14-24 mm f/2.8 lens, ISO 64, -1 EV. The image was imported in Lightroom classic and adjusted using the current landscape mask option (sky vs mountains vs water vs natural ground).

And interesting and foreground, a sharp and detailed subject with backlight thru the keyhole drawing the eye into and thru the frame complemented by a terrific sky - what can I say - you captured a ton of visual interest - nice job Raymond   Posted: 10/09/2025 19:35:08

A superb seascape Ray, well captured at the right time of day, with the light coming through the arch. All elements in this image are great, but I particularly like the sky and the clouds. I have only one question and minor concern, what's that round thing just to the left of the arch, just above the water level? Is it essential to the image? I personally, find it a distraction and once seen I can't stop looking at it. But just a minor detail.   Posted: 10/13/2025 05:20:19

Ian, Thanks - I went back and checked in the original - its spray from the waves coming through those rocks - easy enough to fix since I well know that once we see something that bothers us in an image, it never goes away.   Posted: 10/18/2025 00:51:12

Magnificent image Ray! Your timing was impeccable! The backlighting in the keyhole sets this image apart and makes it and stand out. Congrats on a well done image!   Posted: 10/16/2025 16:01:44

A great image Raymond. I was also drawn to the bright light in the keyhole arch. But in looking throughout the image, I liked the foreground rocks being sharp and showing texture along with the sand that appears with them. I like the sky, but wondered if it should be slightly brighter as the brightness of the arch seems to conflict with the darker sky, just a thought. I like the composition and the arrangement of the arch rock in the center with room on the edges.   Posted: 10/22/2025 18:51:07
