About the Image(s)
This image is from a continuing project I have going at the moment, a coffee table book of photos taken in Sydney, titled "Sydney Then and Now". Some photos are from our historic areas showing our older historic buildings and some from the modern parts of the city showing all the hustle and bustle in the concrete and glass of today. Some such as this one, show a mix of both. I like the juxtaposition between the old pub with the new towers in the background. Details are: Nikon D810; 42mm focal length lens; ISO 64; f16; 1/40 and hand held. Minor processing in LR & PS.

Ian, what a terrific project and good choice regarding the image to put into the book. A couple of suggestions - in my VF I cropped in to remove the partial building on the upper left and when I did so it left a sliver of the white fence next to the sidewalk on the lower left. At the same time, I cropped in from the right to remove the partial stairs on the lower right - I kept the 4x6 format which mean cropping a little from both the top and bottom of the frame. I also opened the shadows to bring out a bit more detail in the Hero of Waterloo building and lastly, I added a touch of a vignette - this may sound like a lot but it's really just tweaking. Best of luck with your project.   Posted: 10/06/2025 15:08:02

The Old vs. New - really love the comparison that clearly shows the then vs. now. I think I might consider removing the cars ...in particular the red car and the white buses. It keeps drawing my eye away from the buildings which are really what the images are about. And with the newer LR and PS it would be possible. I was also surprised by the tables that jut out into the street (of course there is a barrier, but I'm surprised it is allowed (that's not about the image...just a comment about how unusual that is...and would be prohibited in US). Can't wait until it is completed!!!   Posted: 10/16/2025 16:12:14
Thanks for your comments Sherry. This image "might" make it into the book, in the Now section. As the red car and buses show some of the hustle and bustle of our city, they would stay. Just wait until you see the trams going down the streets !!!!   Posted: 10/26/2025 12:17:51
Ian - Good image. I agree with Butch about the partial building on the left but am not sure about the crop on the right as to me it makes the lower right corner a tad crowded. Given this is a project, is replacing part of the image allowed - like getting rid of partial umbrella/table in the lower right since they are temporary and might not be there all of the time. The cars don't bother me as a street with no cars might look strange. I look forward to seeing more of the images planned for your coffee table book. Ray   Posted: 10/18/2025 01:23:03
Thanks for your comments Ray. It's a fun project. Watch this space in some coming months.   Posted: 10/26/2025 12:19:13
I like the composition with the old on the right and new on the left with the tree as a divider so they don't run into each other. I would consider a crop on the left to remove the partial building. The unique tall building in the center is almost a symbol of new and very modern with the building left of it reflecting traditional modern with straight lines and then the older building on the right representing old Sydney. Very nice image and should go well with your book project.   Posted: 10/22/2025 19:11:50
