Taking Flight

Canon R5 ??“ Canon 100-500 @500 mm ??“ ISO 800 ??“ f7,1 - 1/1600th second Tv on a tripod.

I was out in the Sonoran Desert with a friend and there were quite a few songbirds in the area (my friend knew where to find water- ergo, the birds) ??“ and I was able to capture four frames of this Arizona Cardinal taking off, and this was my favorite.

One of the more challenging aspects of photographing birds in Arizona is that everything in the desert wants to bite, sting or stick you, so it’s wise to wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, snake boots (May-November) and large plastic tarp to lay or kneel on. Also, because of the terrain it’s difficult to get as close to these smaller species as I’d like ??“ usually 40 ??“ 50 feet is all the birds will tolerate. And while it’s not a bird mecca like Florida, I’ve been surprised at the variety of small songbirds I’ve found down here.

I often work with an Aussie judge, whom I admire, who would simply call this "quirky" and be done with it. She has a great sense of humor and so does this image. The head angle is just a riot and the body seems a bit contorted as well. This just makes me smile. I really like the red/brown color palette and the overall simple nature of the image. This is clean and uncluttered and with the bird being red it is a real attention grabbler. The technical aspect is certainly well done.   Posted: 11/01/2026 18:10:34

Who does this remind me of? I wonder?
I love to catch a bird doing something different than sitting for a portrait or flying in some great action shot. This one is like - "oops! Another photographer! I'm out of here!"   Posted: 11/01/2026 19:21:48

Butch, a completely different shot of this cardinal, this is all action , it is definitely not posing.

Love the colours: the browns with the warm reds, oranges and yellows work perfectly and create a harmonious whole.

The clean background puts all the focus where it needs to be.

Well done!   Posted: 11/02/2026 06:59:10
