About the Image(s)

I recently returned from a flower photography conference where we visited the Chicago Botanic Garden twice daily for 4 days so I've had lots of images to work on! I've attached one I've titled "Sunburst" and here is the information on my capture and processing:

Hello everyone! I'm so happy to be a new member of your group.

I found this beauty at the Chicago Botanic Garden. I used my 40 - 150 mm telephoto lens to allow me to zoom in for a close shot while blurring the natural background. This was taken handheld at 150 mm, ISO 200, f 2.8, 1/320 sec. My desire was to keep the center more detailed with the back petals somewhat soft. I used Lightroom to crop and do the majority of the edits. I only needed to edit the background a bit to try to have it appear as if some light was radiating from the petals by keeping the green closest to the petals somewhat light and adding a dark vignette around the outer edges of the image. As a final touch, I went into Topaz Studio 2 and applied a filter I like that adds somewhat of a creamy texture to my images without losing any detail. Topaz filters are completely customizable so you can control several aspects of the effect. I believe I added a bit of sharpness as well.

I shoot with an OM 1 mark II which has incredible handheld stability. The 2X crop factor also gives you more depth of field when shooting wide open than a full frame equivalent, which I appreciate.

I look forward to your feedback!

Welcome to our group, Denise. Beautiful! The orange beauty pops against the nicely blurred green background. Sharp details in the center. The softer petals in the back gives more depth to the image. I like it. My only suggestion would be to crop it a bit. I think less background would enhance the flower. Nice job, especially handheld.

It's an honor to have you in our group, Denise! Even before reading your bio, I could tell from you photo that you're no newbie. It's obvious you have so much creative energy to go with your years of experience. I think your crop is fine, but there is no right or wrong, just personal taste. The sharp, in-focus flower contrasts nicely with the beautifully blurred background.   Posted: 10/07/2025 22:15:17

Thank you so much David. From what I've observed reviewing many of the postings from the past, everyone here is a true lover of nature and flowers. I look forward to participating in this group!   Posted: 10/08/2025 18:56:15

Happy to have you in our group, Denise! I checked out your work in the other group you are in. Nice work. The orange really pops with nice soft lighting. Sharp where it needs to be sharp. Great out of focus background. I feel it needs to be cropped some to give the flower about 80% of the space inside the frame. Great image.   Posted: 10/09/2025 01:51:17

Hi Denise, welcome to the group!
I like the centred composition of this image and the beautiful color contrast. The flower is perfectly captured, and your use of depth of field reveals all the shapes and details. I also agree that a closer crop would enhance the flower even more.   Posted: 10/21/2025 12:31:07

Denise, welcome and glad to have you here. Great job at getting the center and surrounding petals in focus and recessed petals soft. I actually like your crop, and the creamy texture! I have Topaz (Photo/Photo AI) but am not familiar with their filters. Maybe I am missing them. Are there equivalent filters in PS?.   Posted: 10/25/2025 18:14:25

Thanks for your feedback Mark! I use Topaz Studio 2 for their creative filters. This is an old program that is no longer supported by them, but I believe is still available to download from their Legacy Apps page: https://docs.topazlabs.com/other-apps/legacy

I have not done a lot with PS so can't speak to what is available there. But I have enjoyed playing with Topaz Studio 2 filters and "looks" because you can dive into them and customize/change things very easily.   Posted: 10/25/2025 18:42:01
