Rose Hips by Dick States

October 2025 - Rose Hips

About the Image(s)

I found these shrub roses growing along the edge of the parking at a nearby park. My eye was attracted to the bright rose hips on the plants. I found this group with a nice composition and loved the texture of the leaves. Rose hips are rich in antioxidants especially vitamin C.
Shot at f5.6, 1/160 sec, ISO 320 with a -1-stop exposure bias. I was using my 200-macro lens with a polarizer on a tripod.

Beautiful! I've never seen such beautiful rose hips. The ones I see are typically a dull red. And you captured them so perfectly. You make it sound so simple to get such a shot by using a "200-macro lens with a polarizer on a tripod." But you're not telling us your real secret! :-)   Posted: 10/04/2025 12:16:16

These rose hips were on a shrub rose which usually have brighter red fruit and less insect problems than hybrid roses. I really have no secrets. I'm old school. I learned photography using slide film with no post processing. Must get it right in the camera. I always use a tripod most important piece of equipment I have. Next a polarizer does more than improve skies especially shinny surfaces on plant parts. I do almost no cropping in post. I always use a reflector as a secondary light on the shaded side. I do all my shots with a 12-megapixel camera and a great lens.

In this image I used some vignette to darken the edges.   Posted: 10/05/2025 21:23:18

To be honest, I don't think I've ever seen rose hips, or if I did I probably thought they were some kind of berry. As a lover of flowers and plants, I'm not necessarily well educated in horticulture, LOL.

I like this composition and the bright red against the green. You've controlled the reflected light well on what appears to be a shiny surface. I see you use a polarizer a lot. That is something I need to try more often as well. I don't always think about that unless I know I'll be near water.   Posted: 10/06/2025 18:50:00

You need to try different subjects with a polarizer and without. Compare the difference with the polarizer all colors will be better. All subjects reflect light off the surface that a polarizer will remove this allows the colors to be better. I have a good polarizer on all my lens. They must be good ones.   Posted: 10/15/2025 21:39:38

Great presentation of the rose hips in its' natural habitat. The red fruit is eye catching. Love the texture. Perfectly composed. You captured the fine details on the plant nicely. Well done, Dick.   Posted: 10/09/2025 15:10:00

The pattern and texture in the leaves makes this photo appealing!   Posted: 10/17/2025 12:01:08

Hi Dick,
I love the crisp colours in this image, they create so nice contrast! The amount of detail and the beautiful lighting make it truly eye-catching. Well done!   Posted: 10/21/2025 12:21:15
