Lily Pads by Alane Shoemaker

October 2025 - Lily Pads

About the Image(s)

My family has been going to Leland, Michigan, every summer since 1981, and for the first time since that year my daughter and I were unable unfortunately to go since I am still recovering from major spinal fusion surgery and she is without a knee due to a severe infection and awaiting surgery for a knee replacement. This image is from The Narrows wetland that connects North Lake Leelanau and South Lake Leelanau taken of the reflections of the lily pads during our time in 2019. This image won the Nikonian July 2025 Macro Abstract competition comprised of 63 entries worldwide, was selected in a juried exhibit at the DBL/Baker Hunt Art Show, and chosen to be one of the miniature art works in dollhouse replica of The Cincinnati Woman’s Club.

Hi Alane: First of all 'congratulations' on your success at the Nikonians competition, it does not happen like that every day!
I have always liked very well photographed nature abstracts and this one is excellent. I love the soft colors which produces a very pleasant soft mood and the Lily pads at the top complete the nature story.

Good job of seeing and creating this fine nature abstract.   Posted: 10/15/2025 04:29:40

Hi Alane! This is a lovely abstract photo so no wonder it won an award! Congratulations!!!
I do hope your recovery time is minimal and you will be feeling much better soon. I have many friends that have had back surgery and all have been successful. Hope your daughter is able to shake the terrible infection and get the knee replacement.   Posted: 10/20/2025 01:12:47

What an interesting rendition of this scene. I can see why it placed well in the Macro Abstract competition. A nice blend of abstract and reality. Lots of great decisions in regard to color, composition. Have you consider rotating this 180 degrees? This would reduce the abstract quality some (which is an artistic choice and not a quality improvement) but retain the scene in a bit more surreal sense. Just a thought that occurred to me. Great images though as it is.   Posted: 10/21/2025 19:44:35
