About the Image(s)

Here is "The Windmills of My Mind”. The originals are from our trip to Oland to the Swedish coast at the beginning of June. There are many old village windmills left on the island that is packed with history, myths and legends, and at sunset it is easy to imagine the windmills wake into life and their immobilized sweeps start turning again. ”The Windmills of My Mind” is a collage of multiple exposure and ICM images, layered upon each other in opacities between 18 and 87% in Normal or Luminosity Blend Modes. I used the strange magenta color cast of the originals as basis for the color scheme, and just adjusted white balance, saturation brightness and contrast. There is a layer of Average Blur in 10 % opacity in Soft Light Blend Mode on top of everything.- I hope that the image looks more like a soft vivid dream rather than just blotches of color and chaotic lines. What do you think?

I love the energy and movement in this image, Kirsti! I think the way you have arranged the windmills with the twirling arms surrounding the most detailed windmill works really well. It makes me feel as if the windmills are churning around. The colors add a nice touch of unworldliness. I definitely understand what's going on here even without the title or description.

Personally, I might try increasing the whites, though that's just a matter of taste. I think your final image tells the story.   Posted: 07/08/2026 18:59:27

Hi Kirsti,

What a lovely image with beautiful colours that perfectly complement the idea behind Out of Your Mind. The placement of the windmills creates a wonderful sense of movement, while the surreal colour palette makes the scene feel as though it belongs to the subconscious. It conveys the concept beautifully and works perfectly with both your idea and the title of the image.   Posted: 07/15/2026 06:21:09

Thank you, Maria! I am so glad - this was exactly what I wished the image might convey.   Posted: 07/15/2026 18:47:28

Kirsti, You've definitely created an interesting kaleidoscopic image that is very dream like. Your original ICMs are even stronger than the collage from a visual perspective as they are more recognizable and have a more pleasing color balance.   Posted: 07/19/2026 03:24:05

Thank you, Brad! I think "kaleidoscopic" is the perfect description for the setup.   Posted: 07/19/2026 16:58:20

"The Windmills of Your Mind" was an Academy Award winning song from the 1968 movie, "The Thomas Crowne Affair." It never occurred to me that the movie and/or song was popular in Finland. In any case, you have successfully created the image of either a dream or of the unconscious at work--probably the same operation in the brain. The monotone adds a lot to the dreamlike/unconscious state of mind. Nice work.   Posted: 07/19/2026 15:45:51

Thank you so much, Alan! We even have a cover version of the song in Finnish although the translated lyrics are only a pale imitation of the haunting original that I have always loved. I am so glad if the image could carry something of the vision.   Posted: 07/19/2026 16:54:22
