About the Image(s)

For this month’s image, I didn’t have a clear direction or idea at first, so I started looking through my photos to find something that could spark some creativity. I came across an image of an old monastery that is being restored by the villagers. I duplicated and flipped it to create a larger room where the story could take place.

Next, I looked for elements to fill the frame. I chose an image of an old dress from a museum exhibition and gave it a face taken from another photo of a small sculpture. I felt the composition still needed something more, so I added a photo of the Gaudí Palace in Astorga, a place we visited last December.

With all the elements in place, I added a cloud image to create fog in the room. Then, I used Nik Analog Efex, applying the Classic Camera 9 filter to blend the colours, followed by a Double Exposure filter to emulate light leaks. Finally, I made some light and shadow adjustments and added a vignette to complete the image.

Hi Maria, what a marvelous subterranean court you have created! I think that there is an underwater feel with the lighting effects and the aqua tones that compliment the warm earth colors. - I was wondering about the mistress of the palace: I think that her face may get lost in the rich background. What about using just the faceless original? It would make a more ghost-like figure but I think that it might bring her out better, and also fit in the Gothic atmosphere? -I also tried to lighten her gown and immediate surroundings slightly with the Dodge brush. What do you think?   Posted: 10/16/2025 06:10:57

A true masterpiece, Maria! And a wonderful transformation of the original images. The color pallet you selected to blend the images works great with the double exposure filter. I especially like the face and the dress as the subject.
The Gaudi Palace is a bit warpy and seems to come up from the ground, so I'm not sure you need all that. But, it certainly is an image that makes takes the viewer on a journey. Well done!   Posted: 10/17/2025 11:17:41

What a wonderful subterranean world you have created, Maria! The light leaks and the aqua color really give me the feeling of sunshine through rippling water. The face on the lady looks mummified, and her dress fits in perfectly with the setting. I love your color palette.

I really like the aqua arc of light going from her feet to the window. For me, it would work even better if the image was reversed, because then it would lead to her rather than away. Just a thought.   Posted: 10/17/2025 17:21:22

Hi Peggy,
Thank you for your comment and suggestions. My eye was immediately drawn to your version, and that was thanks to the flipping, what a great idea!   Posted: 10/21/2025 13:35:04

Maria, I love the complex interplay between light, tone and haze you've created. I think all of the elements come together nicely. For my taste I might remove the tower that emerges from the subjects bottom and maybe have her floating or more nebulously connected with the various layers.   Posted: 10/19/2025 22:35:52
