This image was taken several years ago in Corkscrew Wildlife preserve. I pulled it out of my archives while doing a project for PSA.
I don't remember how it was edited but it was entered into PSA Exhibitions several times under the Nature Category so minimal editing was done.
Taken with a Canon 5D mark 4, f/8, 1/100 sec, ISO 640, 400mm, handheld

That is cool. The hooks on the ends of its legs are amazing looking. It's a very interesting pattern on its back and on the legs. My favorite part is looking at those hooks (or whatever they are called). Was this with a macro lens? I hope your photo did well in competition. Handheld at 1/100? Wow. Posted: 07/02/2026 22:06:00
This image was not taken with a macro but with a 100 to 400 lens at 400mm. This is a rather large spider with a body of about 1.5 inches and the overall size with legs of about 4.5 inches. I believe the hooks you are talking about are the ends of it's legs. Posted: 07/18/2026 20:12:10

WOW! What a beautiful spider even if you are not fond of spiders. I have never seen a spider like this and it reminds me how many of the critters in nature are beautifully colored. Sharp and very detailed showing the tufts on the female's legs and the menacing hooks on the end of the legs. I like that you cropped in a little tighter to bring the spider up close and personal. EWW! Although the colors and web pattern are quite beautiful, 8 legs always get a EWW from me. That said, the background bokeh and the fine detail are excellent. Web patterns and the way in which these creatures create them have always fascinated me. I would not crop the original. I prefer the off center composition and regressing web pattern in the uncropped version. Posted: 07/16/2026 15:12:44

Like Mike, I believe this is one of the best spider images I have ever seen. Everything is in focus and there is no backgorund distraction. I also think the diagonal formed by the spider's posiiton on the web makes it more dynamic. Well done in my opinon. Posted: 07/17/2026 18:26:27
