About the Image(s)

This image was shot at the PSA Festival last month at Portland. There was a program called The Magic of Dance, where the models (ballet dancers in this case), backgrounds and lighting was provided. Because there were multiple photographers shooting, continuous lighting (not strobes) was used.

The only processing done to this photo was the crop. I liked the lighting throughout the full image, but I was just more intrigued with the upper body, arms and shawl than the rest. And, I believe the crop presents a more dynamic vision.

Camera: Olympus OM-D M-1X, 12-40 PRO 2.8 lens. Shot at 24 mm (48 mm full frame), f/2.8, 1/800 sec and ISO 1600. Initial settings were recommended, but I adjusted to what I felt was working with the light, skin, costuming and backdrop for my camera.

Welcome to our group, Paul! This is a great picture. I agree with your cropping of the image, not only because it results in a more dynamic composition, but also because you can details in the dancer's face. Your exposure kept the dancer's skin from having blown-out highlights. Very well done!   Posted: 10/13/2025 23:00:52

Thanks, David. Hope I fit in.
I forgot to mention, and it is kind of hard to see in the small version of the original, but the floor was two different pieces of carpet and backdrop, which were not the same texture or color. Fixing that would be additional work that I did not think that particular photo justified. BUT, last night at my local club, we were discussing the pic and the thought occurred: What if that seam in the flooring was turned into a curb, and there was a puddle, and...Hmmm.   Posted: 10/16/2025 01:42:19

Welcome to our group. I love this photo. Your dramatic lighting and the royal blue against the black are stunning. While I agree the close-up is nice, I also think the full figure would have worked out well, too, rather than cropping at the knees. I look forward to more of your photos.   Posted: 10/17/2025 19:13:35
