About the Image(s)

I was in the Great Smoky Mountains last week and the morning sun was coming through the fog at a low angle, creating a beautiful, almost monochromatic golden light, with touches of orange and red in the autumn foliage. I was drawn to the intimate atmosphere within the trees and the way the fog created layers of clarity and softness, gradually revealing and concealing details. I wanted to capture that sense of depth and quiet mood in the image.

How I Did It: I exposed for the bright sunlight to preserve as much highlight detail as possible, then made a fairly significant crop to focus the composition on the space beneath the trees and the layers of vegetation emerging from the fog. In Photoshop, I lifted the shadows in the foreground and tree trunks to bring out more detail, while slightly reducing the brightest highlights on the left. I also applied a subtle Orton effect using Gaussian Blur to enhance the soft light. Using a mask, I reduced the effect in the foreground to preserve its sharper details, creating more separation between the foreground and the trees behind it.

Looking for Feedback: I'd particularly appreciate your thoughts on the crop and the balance of light and shadow. Does the contrast between the sharper foreground and softer background create a convincing sense of depth? Would love any ideas that might help enhance the mood.
