About the Image(s)

Sony A550 ??“ Minolta 18-35mm 2.8 @ 18mm ??“ ISO 200 ??“ 40 seconds F16 Tripod.

It was my first time visiting this Cathedral, but I happen to visit the same day the BBC was setting up for Songs of Praise on the following Sunday so was only able to go into limited places. One of the places was the Quire which is very Onate.

The woodwork and carvings was very sublime and does look very striking in colour and I find that a lot of the detail is lost in the colour, but you do get that amazing floor. But I always find that the details come out when you remove the colour.

Paul - I should recognise this! But don't, despite me being born and living until I was in my low 20s a few miles away (Heswall)! My shame for never visiting.

Yes, your image is far more interesting as a mono. The detail of all the carved wood, that floor and ceiling shines. Wonderful. It's rare occasions to be able to visit Cathedrals or similar empty and being able to use tripods! Well done.   Posted: 11/01/2026 12:33:18

I think she let me in with the tripod as the Cathedral was that empty and I promised not to get in the way of the BBC. So I was lucky.   Posted: 11/02/2026 10:24:05

Good image. I prefer the Mono treatment. The heavily saturated color image really helped the contrast of the Mono version. Tack sharp, I think I can read from the book! Nice straight vertical lines which I assume you straightened with the wide angle lens. Out of curiosity, why do you have the double question marks after the camera, lens and ISO? Using a tripod on a shot like this makes all the difference in the world. Very well done!   Posted: 11/01/2026 18:53:33

For some unknown reason the camera only says Sony, I believe it to be the A550 but it could have been the A77 but I think I was using the A550 a it was lighter and I would normally use an ISO of 100 or even 50 if I had a tripod.   Posted: 11/02/2026 10:22:39
