Dragonfly by Jody Coker

October 2025 - Dragonfly

About the Image(s)

I couldn’t decide on a photo LOL. I picked this one of a dragonfly perched on what I think is an India Heliotrope. The photo was taken just past midday and was hand held @ 1/800. ISO ended up being 320 and my 400mm zoom lens set to 400 and it was wide open at F5.6. I’m not super happy with background but I was less happy with my attempts to fix it. Also this is a super tight crop down to what ended up as just less than 1200 pix on the long side.

I like it but would have preferred to see more detail on the dragonfly.   Posted: 10/02/2025 18:20:24

I like the position of the dragonfly on the flower. I did take it into the new Topaz Photo and sharpened the dragonfly. Then in LR I reduced the exposure on the background and on the purple part of the flowers.   Posted: 10/04/2025 20:26:53

Overall it's nice picture with soft blur background. I agree with Mark about details on dragonfly, specially head of the dragonfly and the texture on wings. I feel like the flower is "sharper" than the dragonfly and the lighting is little bit bright for my taste. I like to add top and trim bottom.   Posted: 10/05/2025 05:16:22

I prefer Dorinda's image of a sharper dragonfly. Composition wise, I prefer the topside to have more space.   Posted: 10/06/2025 15:56:48

Jody, this would be a fantastic image if only it was sharp.   Posted: 10/11/2025 05:27:47

Jody, great image and great composition. It is a great capture. I love how the plant/flowers curves and how the dragon fly lands on it. Love the color of the delicate wings. One suggestion - I wish there is slightly more space between the tail of the dragonfly and the top of the picture (slightly too tight on top). Otherwise, it is a great photo. However, I also understand it is very hard to "control" things with macro insect shots! Thank you for sharing the image!   Posted: 10/15/2025 05:55:25
