About the Image(s)
My husband and I are spending October at The Sea Ranch, a wonderful community that stretches 10 miles along the northern California coast. I have been bonding with a new camera while exploring the miles of trails. The coastline is very rugged and the ocean is very active. The trees which have been twisted and turned by the strong winds here fascinate me and I feel challenged to get the trees and the ocean into the same photo. 28mm, ISO 60. f11, 0.6 sec.

Maryellen, you've captured a wonderful combination of color, rugged coastline, and fascinating twisted wood. What first struck me was your excellent handling of depth of field, with detail extending from the foreground bark through the offshore rocks to the distant headland. That depth invites the viewer to explore the entire scene. Very nicely done!
The tree has wonderful character, and when combined with the rugged coastline, it tells a story of a life shaped by the elements. Its substantial trunk and tangled branches naturally command attention, and I wondered whether you might build on that strength by making the tree the principal subject, with the coastline providing the setting and helping tell its story.
But what really stays with me is the atmosphere you've captured. There's a wonderful sense of place here, and I applaud both your vision and the thought you put into the composition. Nicely done!
