Here is a shot from last year, Mulley Point is in Southern Utah. Sunrise hitting the canyon below with Monument Valley in the distance.
PhaseOne XF, 35mm lens, ISO 50, f11. Shot on tripod. Dressed up in PS to bring up some shadows, but keep it even.

Hi Joel, a very nice image, I love the panoramic expanse. I think you have done a good job bringing out the shadows and showing the colors. Too bad about the bald sky, not much that you can do about that. I have had some experience with bright skies and I have bracketed my exposures with a degree of success. Posted: 07/08/2026 20:55:33
Thanks Lou. I had a couple of good days there with lots of big clouds, but this morning was not one of those days. I have done bracketing before and it does work good but I did not do it on this day. Posted: 07/16/2026 01:54:59
Joel, I can see where this was probably a beautiful landscape. I think the bright sky fooled your image, so I used dehaze to make the sky better and then adjusted the contrast and brightness on the lower 2/3. What do you think? Posted: 07/13/2026 17:12:47
Your edit works very well Kathy. I the there are artifacts in the jpg that are bought out in the sky that I would not like. The brightening of the foreground whitened it a little bit, but kept the detail nicely. Posted: 07/16/2026 01:57:41
Hi Joel. Beautiful image. Is this a panorama, or is that just how wide your XF camera (I'm assuming it was also an XF lens) can capture the scene? The incredible depth and sense of scale come through well, even in a JPEG.
Muley Point isn't a place I've ever visited, and these days I probably couldn't breathe at that elevation anyway. Monument Valley was on my bucket list, though, and it was every bit as awesome as I had imagined.

Thanks Bob. This is a single shot cropped down to eliminate a good chunk of the sky. the 35mm I think for medium format is about 20mm on a full frame camera. It can capture a lot. The original purpose of this spot was to do a panoramic with 4 images stitched together. But several attempts at making it look right failed.
You pretty much drive up to this spot. I might of walked 100 feet to the edge of the canyon wall to get this shot. And to show my intelligence, I did not even know I was pointing my camera towards Monument Valley when I first started shooting. As I was packing up, I looked out and realized it.
I added a four shot pano I did at the spot with full sky and foreground. I think it is a better photo now that I look at it. Posted: 07/16/2026 02:10:10

You worked your camera into a super-magnificent pano. Congrats! For a mural, you might want to crop a bit of the sky, but when we toured Navajo country with a native guide, it seemed like the sky was that immense everywhere. It gave us the feeling of being tiny-like ants beneath an endless horizon. Your image brings back that same sense of scale and awe. Posted: 07/16/2026 22:17:48
That looks like a good place to photograph, but we've never been there in several trips to Utah. I like the image you added as it has great depth and a great sky. The original seem too dark in the foreground. Posted: 07/16/2026 13:41:07
