Grist Mill by Lauren Heerschap

October 2025 - Grist Mill

About the Image(s)

ISo 6400, 16mm, f16, 1/50 sec taken on OM-1 camera

This was a bit of a challenge because the river and trees were dark, the mill was in sunlight and shadow. I wanted the reflections on the water too. Suggestions on camera settings?

Nice grist mill, interesting when the leaves change? Very tough lighting and there is not much you can do in regard to camera settings, huge contrast range. You could shoot several and do a blend or HDR.

I don't know if the OM-1 MKi has the grad ND filter as an option, if it does, you could try that in situations like this. Another option would be to a Luminosity Mask and there are several plugins on the market which are really good such as Tony Kyper's one. The masks target certain areas and then you can use a number of photoshop tools to help control the bright areas.   Posted: 10/06/2025 18:07:47

Thanks Brad. Yes, my OM-1 has neutral density filters in camera. I need to remember that!

A neutral density filter probably wouldn''t have helped much. You can fake an HDR by making copies of the picture lightening darks and darkening brights and combining using the HDR function your eding application.
Your composition is great It seems to have a blue cast, but that may be due my screen. The blue cast seems to weaken the green of the foliage   Posted: 10/14/2025 18:41:04

Your camera settings look OK to me. I also see a bit of a blue cast. I lke your composition, the mill and then the leading line down the river. Maybe try another version in monochrome so that color is not an issue.   Posted: 10/14/2025 20:49:54

Thanks for the comments. My monitor has been calibrated, and I don't see the blue cast. I will fiddle with the hue slider and see it that changes it. The monochrome/infrared version turns out to be really busy; so I preferred the color.   Posted: 10/14/2025 22:54:08

Yup, blue cast. I like a black and white of this when I did it. While busy, there are two white areas that seem to balance on both sides of the photo. Also, seems like it has more of a focus. Again, just my opinion.
I think the color is kinda busy for me.

An interesting old building, taken under difficult lighting conditions. To me the slight blur cast is due to being in shadow areas and contrasts strongly with the sun lit parts of the image.   Posted: 10/26/2025 09:29:52

So how do you deal with the slight blur cast and white parts of the image?
