About the Image(s)

This was taken at a construction site at a mall near me. As is often the case with modern construction precast exterior walls are put up and held in place by heavy duty braces until the entire structure is secured and the roof installed. I enjoy producing images of the patterns formed by large walls and their shadows combined with contrasting long angular lines, both horizontal and diagonal, as well as differing textures. From the original color picture I cropped in quite a bit until I arrived at a pleasing composition. I also thought that a black and white conversion would add drama. Taken with a tripod mounted Nikon D500 with 18-70 mm lens at about 100 ISO. After editing in Camera Raw I opened into Photoshop CS5 and then into ON1 Perfect Effects 8, where I used the Black and White/ “Roadie” tool.

As soon as I saw this, my pattern wheels started to turn. From the original, I removed the yellow metal arm and another small distraction, so that I had a longer panel to work with. I then flipped the image vertical and horizontal. Now we have a nice base and diagonal strong lines going upward.   Posted: 10/06/2025 15:00:12

Then I duplicated the image and flipped it horizontal. Created a background and slipped the two images on it.   Posted: 10/06/2025 15:03:11

I then duplicated the new image and did the same thing vertically. WE could go on and on in various other ways. Perhaps you and others agree or not, but these things could be fun to do.   Posted: 10/06/2025 15:06:01

Joe's changes are very interesting and I enjoyed the resulting pattern. But as it relates to your image, the complex pattern of lines draws me up and left but there's nothing at the end--where the lines are pointing. Your conversion to B & W was nicely done.   Posted: 10/13/2025 18:44:38

I really like all of the lines here - horizontal, vertical, diagonal. There is not a strong subject here, so the eye takes in the totality of the image - the lights, darks and pattern. My only suggestion would be to darken the blacks and brighten the whites to get a little more contrast. I think your cropping gets to the essence of the pattern. Nice.   Posted: 10/17/2025 16:11:24
