Kingfisher taking Flight by Toya Heatley

November 2026 - Kingfisher taking Flight

About the Image(s)

I received a last minute invite from a couple of fellow photographers
to go to an inlet not far away to photograph kingfishers. The tide was
perfect which meant I was already 20 minutes late. I set up my chair
with the others, got my camera semi-sorted and we were chatting when
two kingfishers dropped onto the branches in front of us. No time to
check settings, it was pick up the camera and shoot, and as you can
see one was already taking off by the time I managed that.

My settings were ISO 8000, 400mm, f/8.0, 1/10000 sec. I am aware they
are not ideal, however it worked and I am happy with the result.

I was using my Lumix G9M2 with the Panasonic Leica 100-400 lens. Being
a micro-four-thirds camera, this means this shot was effectively taken
at 800mm.

I welcome any comments and advice.
