Wild Irises by Darcy Johnson

October 2025 - Wild Irises

About the Image(s)

On a drive through rural backroads in northwest Idaho, we came across a lovely field of wild irises. The area was a bit marshy and getting a good angle on the whole field was problematic so I settled on capturing groupings. The image was taken mid-day. I worked in post to soften the harshness some, removed debris and dark spots, cropped to eliminate additional background irises and added a vignette. ISO 100, 165mm, f/5.0, 1/400 sec.

Hi Darcy,
A very lovely image. A nice color palette, selective focus and your post processing and vignette works well.
Best regards,
Greg

Hi Darcy,
Lovely flowers-great choice to use selective focusing, as it really brings out more detail in the blooms. As a suggestion, to make the front two flowers stand out even more, you could try selecting everything else in the image and reducing the brightness and perhaps the saturation. This would give the front two flowers even greater prominence. To my eye, the front two just aren't strong enough yet, especially with the bright areas in the background competing for attention.
Mother Nature definitely provides a beautiful color palette, especially with these irises.   Posted: 10/12/2025 04:12:25

Hi Tom - Great suggestions. See new and improved version. Implemented your suggestions. If I had more time, I would have fiddled with the bright spot on the right and the background flower upper middle as changes have brought them out more. Thoughts?   Posted: 10/12/2025 16:41:04

Hi Darcy, that works well, the eye is drawn immediately to the subject.   Posted: 10/14/2025 09:22:00

Hi Darcy. That must have been an amazing field of iris and I think your decision to select a small grouping to show off the shape and colors of the selected Iris. I like Tom's suggestion and your reedited version does give more prominence to the main two Iris. My only additional suggestion would be to remove the darker grouping of buds in the bottom middle of the composition. I think they demand too much attention away from the full iris blooms.   Posted: 10/12/2025 22:29:11

Hi Darcy-
I can imagine how lovely the whole field looked like with those colors! I agree with Ingrid that the buds in foreground are a bit distracting as they are darker, and your edit from Tom's suggestion works well. The composition is lovely   Posted: 10/21/2025 11:42:20

Hi Darcy,
Greetings my friend.
An amazing capture of the wild Irises. The background for the Irises seems appropriate with the light and colors.
Thank you for sharing.
Cheers.
Kamal.

Hi Darcy,
I love the color palette and the composition of this particular grouping. My only suggestion would be to remove that dead bloom/bud that is front and center. This would look lovely on someone's wall. Great job!
