Fall in Forest Hill Park by Karen Davis

October 2025 - Fall in Forest Hill Park

About the Image(s)

I've been hoping for some fall color here in Virginia, but only the poplars seem to be showing any signs of yellow so far. I thought I'd dig a photo from the archives to help us get into a "fall" frame of mind. Taken in 10/29/2015 with my Canon 70D and 24-105 lens; 1/250 at f/8.0.

It was a gorgeous autumn day in our local Forest Hill Park. I thought the benches looked inviting (I actually did sit for a spell.) and the gazebo made for a nice point of interest to my colorful composition.

I didn't do much in post, except to add a bit of Vibrance & Saturation; also Texture and some Clarity. There was a jet trail in the sky that didn't add to the story, so I removed it with the new AI Erase feature in Lightroom. (Pretty slick!)

I would love your feedback!

Hi Karen,
What a lovely fall scene. The composition and color palette work well. My only comment is that the image looks a bit soft which may be a result of resizing. At F8 everything should be in focus.
Best regards,

Hi Karen,
This is a well-composed image. The park bench leads the viewer's eye along the shorefront to the structure, which is nicely framed by the lake and the overhanging trees. I agree with the comment about the softness or flatness of the image, which may be due to the shallow depth of field.
As a suggestion, you could try making two selections-one of the park bench and one of the building structure. Perhaps apply a slight increase in sharpness and luminosity, especially to the structure, to draw more attention to the central subject. I'm not sure how well this will work, but it could be worth experimenting with.

Hi Tom,
I appreciate the suggestions. I may see if I can salvage this with some sharpening - or head back to the park and shoot it again this year!
Thanks

Hi Karen. This is a lovely, peaceful autumn scene and the shore line of the lake creates a nice zigzag leading line through the composition. It is a bit soft, but the softness creates a painterly effect that I think is calming in a good way. My only suggestion would be to increase the saturation of the oranges, leaving the greens as they are, to emphasize the season captured.   Posted: 10/12/2025 22:22:49

Hi Ingrid,
Good suggestion on boosting the orange. I'll give that a try!
Thanks for your comments.

Hi Karen - My first thought is, what a lovely composition. My second thought was that my colleagues commenting before me all make good points. A nice serene fall capture. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 10/20/2025 13:38:42

Hi Karen -
I also agree that its a great composition and looks like a lovely place to sit for a while. I would agree with maybe trying to bring out the reds and oranges to really accent the fall colors but well done.   Posted: 10/21/2025 11:40:09
