Illinois Barns by Ingrid Lockhart

October 2025 - Illinois Barns

About the Image(s)

We just drove back to Colorado from Michigan along I-80. This image was taken from my car window at speed in Illinois. You may remember that I captured these same barns two years ago, but didn't have my zoom lens adjusted to show the entire structures. This time, I had more luck. It was taken with my Sony X10iv, 1/3200 of a sec, F4, 90mm. In post processing, I cropped and straightened the image, made slight adjustments with dehaze, texture, clarity and brightness. I also darkened the roof of the red barn, eliminated a tractor on the left edge, and changed the sky from a blank grey/blue, to a more interesting version I captured another time and place. Comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Ingrid,
Once again you captured a very nice scene while moving down the road. The composition and post processing work well. My only suggestion would be to possible crop in some from the bottom to move the horizon line off of the middle.
Best regards,

Thanks for your comments, Greg. I see what you mean about the horizon in the middle. I didn't want to crop, because I need to keep the aspect ratio for my calendar. However, I played with the composition using the distort tool to bring the barns lower in the frame and then the content aware fill tool to add sky in the middle. I'd appreciate your thoughts on the end result.   Posted: 10/09/2025 19:42:17

Hi Ingrid,
I really love the barns featured in America. We don't see these designs in Australia, and from my travels, they seem to be unique to America-though I'm no expert.
I agree with Greg's comments about the horizon line being in the centre, and your adjustments have addressed that nicely. The sky and the field work very well in this image. One suggestion: both barns appear to have similar visual strength in the photo. You might experiment with toning down the luminosity or colours of the back barn to give more prominence to the front barn. I'm not sure how well this will work given their proximity, but it could be worth trying to see the effect.
Once again, I'm seriously impressed with your ability to capture photos so quickly. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ingrid - You did a lot of good work on this image in post. I particularly like the sky you chose. The changes you implemented per Greg's suggestion made a difference. I'm not a fan of the lightening up of the lower corners although that's more of a personal preference. There is lovely color harmony and aging in the barns - great subject choice and a nice addition to your calendar.   Posted: 10/20/2025 13:29:39

Hi Ingrid -
What a lovely capture! I think the sky replacement works very well - I agree with the movement of the horizon line a bit and your comment with the edit looks lovely.
I also agree that a darker vignette may work better if thats what's causing the coloring in the bottom corners.   Posted: 10/21/2025 11:38:08

Hi Ingrid,
Greetings my friend.
Apologies for delay feedback.
You have a wonderful image in this edition. I like the second version of the image after Greg's observation. Taking this image from a running car is some "feat". I loved the image and thank you for sharing.
Cheers.

Hi Ingrid,
Another terrific "at speed" image! My first impression was to crop the bottom and eliminate the light vignette in the bottom corners - as noted by others. I love the rustic feel and the texture you've captured in that aged wood. Great capture!
