Industrial Digger by Tom Brassil

October 2025 - Industrial Digger

About the Image(s)

This month's image was taken from my own backyard. Our neighbour has recently sold up, and the new owners are carrying out a demolition and rebuild. Early stages yet; however, this digger was left in this situation overnight. As such, I took the opportunity to do some light painting.
I used a torch from my property to light the industrial equipment by remotely triggering the camera. I took quite a few images; I’m not sure how many I compiled into this, but looking at it, I’d suggest upwards of 10 merged images.
Since I couldn’t avoid the other neighbour’s property in the background, I used masking to replace the sky with one from another image in my library.

Eight-second exposure for 11 seconds, F11 with ISO 1250. It might not be a thing of beauty, but it’s interesting what we can do with our photography and creative efforts.

Thanks for viewing, and I look forward to your comments.

Hi Tom,
Avery interesting image. The light painting and your post processing give the image a bit of mystery. Nicely done.

Hi Tom. What a fun opportunity in the midst of having to put up with a demolition and rebuild next door. Your light painting is very effective at capturing the shapes and textures of this piece of equipment, while also creating an interesting and foreboding atmosphere. It almost looks like a prehistoric creature. You did a great job of combining the images you took and disappearing the background. Well done!   Posted: 10/12/2025 22:48:09

Hi Tom - It is amazing what can be photographed from one's own backyard. I enjoy your experimentation and what an effective use of your property's lighting to create this image. The sky replacement certainly works at eliminating all but your subject. No suggestions. Well done!   Posted: 10/20/2025 14:14:32

Hi Tom -
I think its a very fitting image for October - I think the lighting works well to create a moody photo. It makes me feel like it will come alive any second. I wish there was a bit more light or definition on the arm just to give it a little edge, as it seems to completely disappear after the bend, but I do love the contrast of the dark shadows with your lighting   Posted: 10/21/2025 11:49:51

Hi Tom,
Greetings my friend.
A nice image from your backyard. The light on the subject, the backdrop of night sky added to the scene. This feels so surreal. Thank you for sharing.
Cheers.

Hi Tom,
This is a great October image - creepy and somewhat prehistoric. At first glance, I thought there was an engineer in the cab, so the lighting is quite effective at sparking our imaginations.
Great image, thanks for sharing.
