About the Image(s)

I shot this ??” along with around 2000 other images ??” in the Onaqui Mountain area, two hours southwest of Salt Lake City UT. The horses are technically feral, not wild, as they are dependents of the horses left by the Spanish explorers and Pony Express. There are several herds around Utah, this one was about 500 and we tracked them for four days.

Sony A7iv with 200-600 GM lens. 216mm, 1/1250sec at f/6.3, ISO 125. Used LR to remove the horse from the middle, and a lot of dust. (Dust was the biggest issue of the trip ??”it was everywhere.). I little bit of cropping and color balancing to try and soften the light. (It was already 9AM so the morning light was gone.)

What a wonderful opportunity to see so many of these horses up close. I love the action captured here, with the dust flying and the clear blue sky as the background. This is a beautiful image. How did you deal with the dust and your equipment?   Posted: 11/01/2026 23:23:23
