October 2025 - The Sky - Totality at Sea - Baja Eclipse
About the Image(s)
Aboard an 84-passenger ship sailing the calm Pacific between Mazatlán and Cabo San Lucas, I witnessed the April 2024 total solar eclipse from a truly spectacular vantage point??”directly on the centerline. Though I had experienced several eclipses before, this was my first attempt at photographing one.
My plan was simple: dedicate just one minute to photography, then put the camera down and savor the eclipse with my own eyes. Before setting out, I studied the ideal camera settings for handheld shots during totality??”no tripod, just intuition and preparation.
As the Moon slipped in front of the Sun, I raised my camera to the sky and fired off a quick burst of frames. The gentle motion of the ship meant many shots were slightly off-center, but this one stood out. I love it for the way it captures what a total eclipse always feels like to me: as if a hole has opened in the sky, offering a glimpse into something beyond.

Amazing image and love the story behind how you captured it. We were in the Tetons in Jackson Hole but my image not nearly as dramatic as yours! Well done and i like how you have put a frame around to give it a focus.   Posted: 10/10/2025 16:46:21

That is beautiful Bunny, an iconic image of a full eclipse. Your description makes it even more wondrous. I didn't get the opportunity to view that particular eclipse.   Posted: 10/15/2025 00:54:13

Bunny you nailed it. I agree with Ally - the white border keeps the eye focused into the image.   Posted: 10/15/2025 12:42:44

It is great that you were able to capture such an unforgettable moment so clearly. Your research paid off. I feel the magical moment when I look at your moon. I'm impressed with the blackness, because I've seen only partial eclipses where I was disappointed not to experience any real blackness of the sky. Excellent idea to present your image to us with the white border.   Posted: 10/15/2025 21:35:19

Yes Carole, there is a world of difference between a partial and full eclipse. It is amazing how the eye adapts to the ever-disappearing sun. It's not until that last bit gets covered up that we observe darkness. And then, glasses off and one can look at the sky with the naked eye.   Posted: 10/26/2025 01:58:29
