La Traviata on Stairs by Barbara Mallon

October 2025 - La Traviata on Stairs

About the Image(s)

I am the photographer for the Livermore Valley Opera. I take photos during rehearsals. Most of my images would not qualify for anything above Newspaper. This opera had youngish, thin, people with great costumes, voices and sets. This is one of my favorites taken a week ago. Having a camera with great focus and high ISO’s enabled me to hand hold the camera. Such freedom! ISO 2500, f4, 1/400th sec. Canon R5 Mark 2.

Barbara,
I just accidentally ran into your photo in another group. Glad to see you're still with us. I am reaching from a long way away. My eyes are very bad with macular degeneration. But I am still active in two DD groups and competing in Camera Club. I am using older photos because I am no longer taking photos anymore.. Give me an mail, if you can. My address is joan421@comcas.net. My computer is on its las legs so the email is a bit touchy.
I alway love your work. The woman is beautifully. placed and the red. robes are perfectly draped over the stairs.

Barbara, this is an excellent capture; it's a well-lit, sharp "record shot." Record shots are tough because the photographer has little of no control of the variables, but you captured the subject casting a glance, which adds interest to the image. I'm unsure if I'd prefer the object of her glance included in the frame, but a bit of mystery isn't a bad thing either. Depending upon the crop of your RAW file, you might consider cropping higher and eliminating the dark area at the bottom of the stairs aligning the visual weight more with her head and the implied upward motion of the subject - see my VF - I added canvas with PS Generative Fill.   Posted: 10/05/2025 20:41:00

Thank you. The tops was cropped. I will revisit the image before entering it in the camera club.   Posted: 10/09/2025 20:38:56

This is from the original with different cropping. Thanks for your comment. I will enter this next Monday as a print and we will see what the judge says!   Posted: 10/15/2025 17:04:47

Very nice image under what I am sure is difficult lighting. It is a good pose with her turning her head back. I do like the crop by Butch and your revised image. It seemed wrong the the top of the arch was cut off.   Posted: 10/21/2025 15:11:16

Nicely caught image with the backward glance. Yes, I agree with the others about the top of the arch and I think it's great that you have this. The only other thing is her face also seems very red and while I appreciate the lighting would have been very tricky, for a competition I would try and reduce the red saturation in her face. But very poised and posed shot.   Posted: 10/25/2025 18:59:14
