October 2025 - Pier 60

About the Image(s)

Several years ago, Jim Mahoney, APSA, EPSA and I were doing a photo shoot of the notable places located in and around Clearwater, Fl. I took an interest in Pier 60 who were enjoying the Street Performers, many small shops, and the pleasant warm evening . To me, “Pier 60” was my favorite image of the evening. My tools were Canon D40 coupled with a 24 to 135 mm lens. My settings were ISO 800, f8 @ 1/60th of a second . In Post, the image was cropped, increase saturation then sharpened.

Great lighting and colors. Almost looks like an old time poster or travel ad. I like the symmetry. This image has a happy welcoming feel. The only nit for me is the white light and some halos around the trees and arch.   Posted: 10/06/2025 03:54:36

Hi Vella, the halos showed up when I created an HDR. They can be eliminated in P.S. however it doesn't bother me.   Posted: 10/20/2025 20:01:31

Erik, I must agree with Vella's comment. The illumination is so good that it looks like it was staged, which is OK. The halos are very obvious.   Posted: 10/10/2025 17:10:17

Was this HDR bracketing ?? That could cause the halos.   Posted: 10/13/2025 23:45:57

Yes it was HDR.   Posted: 10/14/2025 00:46:46

Interesting composition. In spite of the dominance of the arch, my eye went straight to the people and only later came back to the arch where I spotted the halo. Great lighting on the people and lots going on. Is there some way the halo can be reduced in PP?   Posted: 10/14/2025 13:48:55

I'm not sure Guy, as I told Isaac, this was an HDR. I could try the Removal Tool in P.S.   Posted: 10/15/2025 13:21:25

I am no longer familiar with PS since I went over to ON1 RAW for my PP.   Posted: 10/15/2025 13:24:02

Hi Erik
This so sums a warm relaxed summer evening, the oranges and blues sit so well together, the pillars of the foreground arch draws the eye straight through into all the activity on the pier, everytime you look you spot something different you could expect to see this image used to advertise the relaxed easy atmosphere of the location.
My only surprise there is not a pelican walking towards you on the pier.   Posted: 10/17/2025 15:39:28

Thanks for your kind comments Ian. As the Pelican stoped in front of me, I patted its head, after issueing me a smile it walked away.   Posted: 10/20/2025 19:57:54

Erik, to my eye the colors on this are so good that it looks like a postcard. Also, having never been there and living such a short distance away. It is an area that I think Karen and I would like to visit. Perhaps you and Betty Sue could introduce us the area. I look forward to seeing you and learning from you at Circle B Bar.   Posted: 10/18/2025 20:09:21

I believe that you and I worked on this image together. It is well composed and everything is straight and smooth. I'm not totally convinced about the lighting. It's too yellow for my liking. And, has others have noted, the white halo is a bit distracting. It can be reduced or eliminated but it takes a lot of photoshop work.   Posted: 10/20/2025 15:13:43

Now that you mention it, I agree with the presence of the yellow hue.   Posted: 10/20/2025 22:07:27
