About the Image(s)

While at the PSA conference in Portland I saw a presentation by photographer Jeff Shewe. He introduced me to a new app for my iPhone, Tintype. I’m presently in the Palouse region of Washington and getting lots of pictures for future use. I couldn’t resist using the app a this image of grain storage as an homage to our leader and administrator, Gary.

Bill, Butler it is indeed. The effect looks like the old photographic glass plates, or perhaps Daguerreotype Photography. Interesting composition. Perhaps the lower grey segment is slightly distracting and could benefit from some cropping. Obviously you were enjoying your Palouse photo tour.   Posted: 10/05/2025 11:43:32

Luckily your choice of subject really lends itself to this type of filter. To my eyes a slight tilt. I agree with Gary, a bit more cropping on the bottom because the bushes are interesting.   Posted: 10/06/2025 03:46:15

Isaac and Vella make valid points concerning the tilt and crop. That said, it is an interesting concept to enjoy.   Posted: 10/11/2025 12:48:54

This is an interesting effect and here it is used on a suitable subject, making it look like a genuine tintype print. I'm not convinced about the tilt, though. Although the side of the large container looks like it has a slight lean to the left, the structure holding up the small container looks vertical. If that is water at the bottom it shows that this container is old and neglected. Maybe the big container is settling on soft ground and has tilted a little.   Posted: 10/11/2025 16:36:18

Hi Bill
I worked in the grain trade for many years so this silo is such a familiar sight to me,I love the filter and the effect it has given as already said it looks like an old glass plate I think you will have a lot of fun with this.   Posted: 10/12/2025 13:32:03

Bill, you have done an excellent job in post giving this a vintage look. The bent leg of the tank support on the left adds to the feeling. The DoF keeps the viwer's eye solidly on the structures. Thanks for the thought!   Posted: 10/18/2025 12:52:48
