About the Image(s)

This months image is one that I'd been looking forward to taking for about 8 years.
The foreground features the back of the head of my grandson - now age 11 - looking at a photograph I took of him when we took a trip to the Smokey Mountains when he was about 3 years old. In the picture, he's facing a waterfall while resting on a bench. His right hand is resting on a walking stick that just his size. I've liked that image before I even clicked the shutter 8 years ago. An interesting feature of the image presented is a 3rd component - a small statuette of a young boy sitting cross-legged seemingly looking straight ahead. I placed both the framed picture along with the statuette on a mantle in our house and had my grandson stand and act as if he's contemplating the picure of his younger self contemplating the waterfall. I like to call it "Evan Contemplating a Picture of Evan Contemplating a Waterfall".
I used my Canon 6D MkII with the 24-105 (f4) lens and a Canon Speedlight aimed at the ceiling to bounce the flash and get a softened light. As you can tell from the original image, my ability to get the image perfectly vertical was way off, but, with straightening and cropping. I thing it turned out pretty well.
In Lightroom, the crop was changed from the original 3:2 ration to a 16:9 to eliminate some of the distrations along the edges. I used a mask to eliminate the shadow from the flash on the wall behind the statuette. I also masked the walking stick to brighten it a bit and make it more noticeable. All other adjustment were minor slider moves with the exception of the Highlights (-50) and the shadows (+44).
What do you think?

Jim, this is a nicely thought out image. I like the depth created by the three main participants in this image. In particular I like the intensity of the gaze of the statuette.
Maybe you could "square up" the photo of "young Evan." The top right hand corner of the photo of him tilts upwards. To fix this, in photoshop select the area of the photo, then Edit>transform>warp and drag that top corner down a little.
A lovely image, well done.   Posted: 10/03/2025 00:38:52

Thank you for your comments, Martin.
I do intend to print this image and give it to my grandson. I will utilize the transform tools to straighten the top edge. Thanks for the tip.   Posted: 10/11/2025 10:32:06

What a fun picture, and I am sure at his present age your grandson loves seeing himself. Well executed. Now my suggestion is that when he is older, you get him to take one of you viewing the picture for another layer!   Posted: 10/04/2025 19:00:35

Thanks for your comments Shirley. I LOVE the idea of taking successive images over the course of years - some that even might include me. That could be a fun continuing project. I'll have to pursue that as he grows.   Posted: 10/11/2025 10:36:59

Great image, Jim. The statue and the younger Evan seem to have the same pose and by including it, you've managed the rule of odds. I agree with Martin's idea in bringing down the top right corner.   Posted: 10/05/2025 14:59:10

Thanks for your comment, Karen,
I do intend to print this but wanted to get this groups feedback first. I will correct the upper edge of the frame when I do.
Shirley had a great suggestion that I continue to do this over the years - printing each, then have an older Evan viewing it again and again.   Posted: 10/11/2025 10:42:51
