Launch day at the races! by David Robb

July 2026 - Launch day at the races!

About the Image(s)

Canon R6, iso/320, 157mm, f/14, 1/800.

Whatcom county youth race weekend. All clubs from Washington and British Columbia are invited to the event.
I saw this pic on my way into town. A parking lot full of chaos, interesting subject. Then on the way back from town I was wondering about a new background. Pavement is not that interesting though I thought the steeple was. So I went across from the action, where I live and walked the docks till I found the best setting. With the steeple.

The capture of the boat close in leads eye to the whole image with all the boats and heir sails pointing upward just as the steeple of the church. Nice combination. Darkening the sky and the water some would increase depth.   Posted: 07/09/2026 21:58:59

You were in a great place to capture this. My eye is drawn the the large sail on the left side. I might have cropped off all 3 boats on that side to draw attention to the background activity.   Posted: 07/10/2026 12:21:46

Looks like a fun day. The image does portray some of the chaos. The large boat on the left kind of steals the scene and Dennis' suggestion might be a good one to try.   Posted: 07/10/2026 22:05:40

Like the steeple but the boat on the left draws the eye away from it.   Posted: 07/17/2026 13:14:49

A bounty of spires.Taking out the sail (but not the boat) on the left made the church spire pop out. It's busy but the spire theme come out well.   Posted: 07/17/2026 21:59:28

I noticed that you framed the photo using the steeple and the mast's yard arm. It's a great idea!   Posted: 07/20/2026 04:17:06
