Common Kingfisher by Sarita Yeola

March 2024 - Common Kingfisher

About the Image(s)

This photograph was taken in Mumbai, India in November. Other than the beauty of this Kingfisher what really struck me was the fishing line in its beak. Earlier in my walk along the mudflats I had seen this bird flying around with the string but was unable to photograph it. I wonder now if it was able to get rid of the string. I cropped the original and did some minor light adjustments, passed it through Topaz Denoise for the final version.

Nikon D500: 500mm, f/5.6, 1/2500s, ISO 400

These beauties are found in Thailand also, I saw them there...and the female is as colorful as the male. You got a lovely shot and the string story is interesting.   Posted: 03/09/2024 22:05:53

Very nice, Sarita. Apart from your excellent composition and exposure decisions, there is a story there with the fishing line hanging from its beak. There's so much wildlife that suffers from human litter. A little context about that is the only thing I would have like to learn more about. We photographers are, after all, ambassadors for the environment. Great shot!   Posted: 03/13/2024 23:42:49

Lovely image Sarita, Kingfishers are a nemesis (or at least the belted Kingfisher here in US) and getting them in flight is so hard.I pray for them to land!

I hope there was not a hook attached to that string. ive seen that happen frequently. Particularly when birds and fishermen are in the same spot.

I love your placement of the bird in the frame, the colors are magnificent, and and the background lighting is perfect! Wonderfull shot.   Posted: 03/15/2024 14:34:02

These are stunning colors and his pose is perfect for your shot. I am sorry about the string or fishing line. We are encroaching on nature everywhere. This would be a good photo to enter in a competition that has a conservation or environment category.   Posted: 03/26/2024 17:09:13

I share everyone's concern for the poor bird.

Kingfishers are SO hard to capture; you did an amazing job. Well done.   Posted: 03/27/2024 21:32:12
