2005 Mt. Whitney by Blair Roy

March 2024 - 2005 Mt. Whitney

About the Image(s)

This photo was taken on a hike to climb Mt. Whitney, near base camp. I am not sure if I like this photo because of the sentimentality of the trip. In LRC, I used the auto setting to bring out the colors. It was taken with an iPhone in 2005. ISO 100 f/3.5 1/45

Hey Blair. You didn't just take this did you? I mean, I expect there's snow up there right now. Anyway...

Love the color gradient you have going on here (I want a T-shirt with this gradient). The bluish grey and the rusty red really speak volumes re: hazy sunsets, and they're saturated just right IMHO. I don't mind the shadowy grey of the rock, since it contrasts the and frames the horizon.

Uh, when you say you "used the auto setting to bring out the colors," what do you mean exactly? I've found iPhone images to be very good, often, but the thing is if you let the camera/phone do what IT wants, you may or may not get what you want, and often times, at least to my eye, that's over-saturated. I'm not shy about using auto features, but they're a double edged sword, and with great power comes great responsibility.

And speaking of Auto, I think that relying on auto in this case may have been less than helpful, because it used ISO 100, which forced a shutter speed of 1/45. That's typically slower than you want to use handheld (rule of thumb is a) no less than 1/60, or b) 1/ 2X the focal length). The foreground looks OK, but I do wish it were a bit crisper.

Oh yeah, is it just me or is that horizon crooked? Fortunately, that's an easy fix.

Glad you thought to whip out your picture taking machine on an occasion like this.   Posted: 03/10/2024 19:39:53

Hi Damon,
Thanks for your input. I think my monitor must be offset too much to catch the horizontal line issue, and this is the second time! :) I will correct that.
The auto that I mentioned was in Light Room Classic, my bad for being so vague. That being said, I did use an iPhone (I think). This was taken 18 years ago! Wow! I had to do the math a couple of times to realize it was that long ago. It was in October, just before the snows really started.
Thanks for all of your comments as it is helping me learn.   Posted: 03/21/2024 21:41:21

Blair,
I like the soft colors of the sunset and the contrast between the blue and pink sky. To my eye, the sky area above the pink is largely nonde and adds little but space to your image. Attached is a crop of your image which gives more emphasis to the color in the sky and uses the rocks to direct the viewer's eyes to the center. As always with a crop it is about what you want to emphasize and what you want to delete; this is one option.   Posted: 03/11/2024 20:29:45

Dean,

I love your crop! Thanks so much. I think I was too focused on cropping out rocks and did not consider the top of the image. Great suggestion!   Posted: 03/21/2024 21:43:28

Hi Blair, this is a very peaceful image. I recently started hiking and nothing beats the views, sounds, and breeze from these settings. My views are still closer to the ground than most, but I look forward to working my way a little higher. I love the colors in the sky here. My only suggestion would be to saturate them a little more, so that that to top of the image has more color.   Posted: 03/18/2024 16:27:51

Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your comments. I think Dean may have come up with a solution for the sky by cropping the top off a bit. It really made a difference to do so.   Posted: 03/21/2024 21:44:40

Blair, this image has beautiful colors in it. So to emphasize those, I would crop the top and focus more on the blues and pinks. If you wanted to try saturating the rocks or dodge and burn the rocks, you might bring out more of the lines. What an accomplisment to make this climb!   Posted: 03/21/2024 13:35:09

Hi Rita,
Thanks so much for your comments. Now I have more to learn - dodge and burn? That will be a new one for me. I like the idea of working more on the rocks. Thanks so much.   Posted: 03/21/2024 21:45:57
